PSYC 4950: PSYCHOLOGICAL ISSUES AND SOCIAL VALUES PROGRAM GOAL TEMPLATE
Name: SAMPLE _
Area Narrative Evidence
Goal 2. Scientific Inquiry and Critical Thinking
Understand and apply basic skills and concepts in interpreting behavior, studying research, and applying research design principles to drawing conclusions about psychological phenomena.
Strengths | 2.1C: I am able to describe how nature and nurture interact to drive different behaviors in interpersonal relationships. 2.2B: I understand that secondary sources can be useful for seeing the big picture of how research on a topic can connect and support a theory or perspective; and that primary sources are useful for developing my own interpretations of the research and seeing the complete data set. 2.3C: I am able to assess implemented strategies in the workplace and propose they either be continued or altered based on my experience in similar environments or knowledge gained at school. | 2.1C: For my social psychology course I had to write a paper on conflict resolution within a dyad relationship. I wrote about how some partners are withdrawn and internalize the things which upset them rather than communicating. That these behaviors can be explained both by a more stable introverted personality trait determined biologically and by modelled observations of relationship dynamics in their own parents as a child. 2.2B: For my research methods course I had to write a literature review to provide background for a project proposal on stereotype threat and academic success. I read review articles that helped me figure out what has been looked at in the area and what sort of methods could be used. Then I read and reported the research of primary sources such as studies on lower income and underrepresented minorities to demonstrate that there was still a gap in the research, but that the methods I was proposing would parallel previous methods in these studies. 2.3C: At my job I was promoted to office manager and given access to personnel files and store policies. I reviewed the issues that the store had experienced in the past few months and what the previous manager had |
done to fix the problems. I identified one problem where customers were complaining about an employee’s insensitive remarks that the previous manager had transferred that employee to working in the back room. This was not a great solution because the insensitive remarks were just being directed at fellow employees now. Instead, I recommended we implement sensitivity training for all employees to allow for a more positive work culture. 2.5B: I once advised my 14 year old cousin who had to create a small research study on his own. He wanted to research the people of his area, a tougher neighborhood populated by Mexican immigrants. I told him he would have to consider the culture of the neighborhood and respect the fact that a majority of the people who will be involved in his survey will be speaking and reading in Spanish so if he wanted a good outcome he would have to create a Spanish version of his survey. | ||
Weaknesses | 2.4A: I sometimes have trouble interpreting qualitative data and determining whether it was appropriate for the research question. | 2.4A: I tried to complete an article critique of an archival study on peer relationship quality. I got that certain key words could indicate the general state of the relationship being described by the participant, but I was unable to address why it might be better than a quantitative Likert-scale survey. |
