Assignment Instruction Background
In the context of community health and this Health and Safety course, it is important to distinguish between health and safety, even though they are closely connected.
Health refers to a person's overall physical, mental, and social well-being. It includes things like access to nutritious food, clean air and water, preventive care, chronic disease management, mental health support, and opportunities for physical activity. Health is shaped by a wide range of factors, including genetics, behaviors, and the conditions in which people live, work, and learn.
Safety, on the other hand, refers to the conditions that protect individuals from harm, injury, or danger. In a community setting, safety includes things like protection from violence, safe housing, traffic safety, environmental hazards, and emergency preparedness. Safety is foundational to health, as without it, people may not be able to access health-promoting resources or engage in healthy behaviors.
These two factors are often connected. For example, a neighborhood might have a park that could support physical activity, but if residents do not feel safe walking there due to crime or poor lighting, the health benefit is lost. Similarly, access to a clinic is important, but if the route to get there is unsafe, it becomes a barrier to care.
Task
For the internet exercise this week, please work with these two websites:
County Health Rankings
Trust for America's Health
https://www.tfah.org/state-details/massachusetts/
Referring to the internet sites above, develop a one-page infographic that:
- Describes a SAFETY measure (e.g., violent crime, firearm injury, motor vehicle deaths, etc.).
- Describes at least two intervention strategies (e.g., helmet laws, firearm restrictions, seat belt laws, etc.).
The work should clearly identify why the intervention you propose can improve community health, incorporating elements of the "bold new model of health" that you learned (Source Columbia University).
