Overview
Massive media exposure to the near-naked perfect bodies of models and athletes has been shown to have a negative effect on body image and mental health of young people. With the increased access and use of social media by younger teens and pre-teens, companies are given the ability to track search history, interests and photos activity on phones. This provides algorithms to use this data to target specific brans and products that can influence body image. Example: what young children can see on the magazine covers in the checkout line of the super market or what the algorithm shows on Instagram or Snapchat). Do you think there should be public policy changes (e.g. censorship or boycotts) on media images of bodies or the manipulation of algorithms that give children and adolescents an unrealistic concept of what a body should look like? Why or why not?
