Overview

As mentioned in the Orientation and Practice Issue module, in this course we are practicing discussing sensitive issues based on the evidence and not opinion. In this module you will read two articles reviewing research that supports opposing positions of a psychological issue. Review articles are secondary sources that are immensely useful for identifying the most common arguments in support of a position, and some of the critical research that supports those arguments. Each article was selected because it has five key qualities: (1) It has the same motivating research question as the Issue Position. (2) It is not overly narrow in its focus. (3) It is published in a peer-reviewed, scholarly journal in psychology. (4) It is neither too recent nor too old (published between 1990 and 2013 is ideal). (5) You can access the full text of the article. If you are in a presenting group or interested in further reading, you can use these reviews as "anchoring articles." Within the Course Materials menu option you can find advice on using these reviews as "anchoring" articles to find additional literature.

You already possess the psychological knowledge to make an informed argument. Now we are going to work on how well you communicate your point with appropriate support. In this module, your will work together with your group to take the research you have read and synthesize it into a presentation supporting your assigned position. As mentioned before, there will come a time when you will likely be asked to make recommendations based on your acquired expertise. Your psychology education has uniquely prepared you to not only provide a more informed recommendation that considers human factors, but to understand the necessity of supporting your recommendation with evidence. Remember your audience. For the presentation, your classmates are your audience. For your papers, your Instructor is your audience. For both the presentation and the paper, do your best to be clear.
