Overview
The role of social media in shaping and influencing body image perceptions among young adults aged 18–30
.”You are required to write a research report of 2,000 words (±10%) focusing on young people’s opinions and experiences regarding the role of social networking sites in shaping and influencing perceptions of body image.
In this assignment, you will apply the thematic analysis method proposed by Braun & Clarke (2006) to process and analyse interview data collected on the topic “The role of social media in shaping and influencing body image perceptions among young adults aged 18–30.”
The six phases of Braun and Clarke are as follows:
- Familiarisation with the data
- Coding
- Searching for themes
- Reviewing themes
- Defining and naming themes
- Producing the report – presenting and interpreting findings
The aim of this assignment is to develop an understanding of the process of conducting qualitative interviews and analysing qualitative data, as well as to understand the epistemological foundations upon which this methodological approach is based.
Additionally, students will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the structure and content of a research report based on qualitative data analysis.
It is not required to conduct the actual interviews for this assignment. Instead, you should assume that the interviews have already been conducted and that you have collected the necessary qualitative data.
Your task is to present the analysis and the resulting findings as if you had gathered the data yourself. In other words, the report should simulate the thematic analysis process — including data familiarisation, coding, theme identification, and interpretation — based on hypothetical or sample interview material relevant to the topic “The role of social media in shaping and influencing body image perceptions among young adults aged 18–30.”
