Psychology Question

You MUST attach a copy of the actual instrument you use for completion of this assignment when you submit. Failure to submit a copy of the instrument you chose for this assignment will result in a zero.

Body Image Instrument Template

There are numerous body image assessments used by health care practitioners and researchers.

What is an Assessment (Instrument)?

An assessment or instrument is a tool used to gather information about a specific topic—in this case, information about an individual's body image and related health issues. These tools can come in many forms, such as surveys, questionnaires, checklists, or interviews. Each one is designed to measure a person’s thoughts, feelings, behaviors, or experiences in a structured way.

For example, a body image assessment might ask people how they feel about their appearance or how often they engage in certain health-related behaviors. A wellness assessment might ask about areas like stress levels, physical activity, sleep habits, or emotional well-being.

How Health Practitioners Use Instruments in the Field

Health educators, wellness coaches, counselors, and other professionals use assessments—also called instruments—to gather important information about a person’s health, behaviors, and overall well-being. These tools help practitioners:

  • Identify areas of concern – For example, a body image instrument (or assessment) can reveal if a client is experiencing body dissatisfaction or at risk for disordered eating.
  • Create personalized plans – Results from the instrument guide the development of targeted wellness strategies that address the client’s specific needs.
  • Track progress over time – Practitioners can use the same assessment at different points to monitor change and evaluate whether a client is improving or facing new challenges.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness – Assessments help determine whether a health or wellness program is making a measurable difference for individuals or groups.

Valid and reliable instruments provide health professionals with evidence-based data to support better care and decision-making.

For this assignment, you will research and review various body image instruments. Examples of body image instruments (also called assessments) include questionnaires, rating scales, and surveys.

Your course textbook provides many body image instruments for you to choose from. Review chapter 18 (Table 18.1) to find a list of different instruments. It might be useful to pick an instrument from the textbook and do a Google search to find the instrument, or use the online ASU library and search for a specific instrument name. For example, search "Body Image Questionnaires" and you will find peer-reviewed journals that also provide the actual instrument, which you will include with this assignment.

Review several instruments, and read the instructions below when determining the best one to use to fulfill assignment criteria.

This assignment is worth 25 points; 15 for completing the analysis and 10 for sharing your completed assignment into the correct discussion board.

AI may be used for the completion of this assignment, but you must cite AI use in your work. HERE are the steps for attributing work to AI.

AI will not determine reliability or validity of an instrument. Over reliance on AI may decrease your critical thinking skills. You must use your critical thinking skills to make this determination.

Instructions

Choose a body image assessment or instrument that is valid, reliable, and used in research or healthcare-related settings. Failure to submit a copy of the actual instrument you chose for this assignment will result in a zero.

Note: Do not select one from an entertainment or media-based source (i.e. fitness magazine questionnaires, mainstream health website surveys with .com addresses, etc.). If you choose one from an unreliable source, you will be required to redo this assignment.

You are NOT allowed to use the Body Esteem Scale instrument for your submission, because it is used as a model for this assignment (see Learning Materials). If you use the Body Esteem Scale to complete your assignment, you will earn a zero and have to redo the assignment.

You must use the attached template

for completing this assignment. Write your answers under each prompt. DO NOT DELETE ANY TEXT FROM THE TEMPLATE. Failure to use the template correctly will result in a 25% grade deduction.

Write a brief summary regarding: (1) exactly what the assessment measures, (2) how and why professionals use it, and (3) what population the assessment is intended for. (3 points)

Explain why the assessment/instrument is scientifically reliable and valid. How do you know it is scientifically reliable and valid? (2 points)

Reliability: A test or procedure produces similar results each time it is performed.

Validity: A test or procedure actually measures what it was designed to measure.

Analyze the assessment or instrument in 400-to-650 words by answering the following questions. (8 points).

The total word count for this section must be between 400 and 650 words, not including the prompts.

  • Would you use this assessment in the future with clients, students, etc? Why or why not? If not, what population would you use the instrument with and why?
  • Do you feel it's a good assessment? Why or why not? Include any other interesting/pertinent information regarding the assessment tool. It is required that you demonstrate critical thinking and analysis in this portion of the assignment and include details to support your assertions.

Format your references consistent with APA standards (in-text citations and a reference page). (2 points).

Attach the instrument (Submit a screenshot or a PDF of the actual assessment/instrument. Do NOT share a weblink).
