Introduction:
Human sexuality can be an uncomfortable topic to talk about or read about—it is shrouded in different cultural taboos, understandings, and norms. Yet, our sexual health, identity, and function lay at the core of many aspects of our lives. Gender also shapes our lives and provides a lens through which we experience the world. Sex, gender, and sexuality have complex relations. As such, psychologists strive to understand the intricacies of these constructs and communicate that knowledge to diverse audiences.
It is critical that we disentangle commonly used terms in this area of study, so as to not use them erroneously. In brief—Sex refers to our biological foundations—typically male or female as determined by chromosomes. Gender refers to a person's gender identity and expression and is influenced by societal and cultural expectations. Sexuality or sexual orientation refers to whom someone is attracted to. Research has enhanced our understanding of these constructs across time, and our vocabulary has become more expansive and precise as a result.
