Overview

  • APA FORMAT
  • Counselors who work with children and adolescents often need to balance their clients' or students' rights, their own views of moral and ethical behavior, and the demands of ethical codes and state laws. Counselors must be aware of their own values and biases and how they may impact their work with students or clients. They must also be knowledgeable about ethical codes and state laws that govern their profession and be able to apply them in practice. Counselors must strive to protect their students' or clients' rights while also ensuring that they are not violating ethical codes or state laws. It is important to teach students or clients to be proactive, to act when necessary, and to hold themselves and their peers accountable to high ethical standards.
  • Vignette 1: A 13-year-old boy describes himself as being gay and discloses that he has been sexually intimate with his 17-year-old friend LeRoy for the past three months. He is worried he may have a sexually transmitted disease. He wants your advice and support but does not want you to tell his parents.
  • Share your thoughts on the things that surprised you most about the selected vignette and discuss what you believe is the role of the school or mental health counselor in a case like this. For school counselors, how much information would you share with the teacher in your follow up?
