Purpose of the Assessment

You will be preparing a final paper in which you consider a topic of your choice through the lens of cognitive psychology. You are certainly free to expand upon work done previously in the course if you’d like. For instance, you could analyze the case of Genie in which you do additional research and comment on each of the 5 competencies for this course, or you could take the psychological disorder that you considered in Milestone Activity 5 and expand on it. You are also welcome to take on some other topic completely. The important thing is that you discuss issues related to attention and perception, memory, language, problem solving, and reasoning/decision making when analyzing your topic.

Submission Artifacts:

Submission 1: APA style student paper

Each analysis should begin with a broad overview of your topic and then dive into specifics of the topic as they relate to the competencies listed above. You do not need to approach the competencies in any particular order, but you should make sure that each competency is sufficiently addressed in your analysis. The entire analysis should be 10-15 pages in length (double-spaced, 12-point font, one-inch margins all around) and should be uploaded in a .doc, .docx, .pdf, or some other file format that is compatible with either Microsoft Word or Adobe’s PDF reader.

Because you will be including some description of research that’s been done on your topic of choice, it is important that you cite appropriately throughout your paper and include a reference page at the end of the paper. Both your in-text citations and reference page should conform to APA guidelines. If you have questions about how to properly cite references either in the text of your slides or in the reference slides themselves, please consult the resources listed on the final assignment page on Brightspace and/or reach out to your instructor with specific questions.

Obviously, you could choose any number of broad topics, so be sure that you can access appropriate resources for your topic of choice before moving too far. Appropriate resources in this sense are academic, peer-reviewed journal articles and legitimate scientific sources of information. If you have any questions about whether a resource is appropriate, please ask your instructor. You should also reach out to your instructor if you’re having difficulty in choosing a topic. You are strongly encouraged to complete the draft assignment to receive feedback before submitting the final work, but this is optional.

File Logistics:

  • Paper should be saved in a Microsoft Word Compatible format
  • Papers should be 10-15 double-spaced pages (not including title page and references)
