Overview

The BACB will serve as my foundation of my future professional practice. Bailey et al states, "Rather than focus on violations, (i.e. what not to do), the code now describes the best ethical practices suited for a changing society"(Bailey et al. p.71). The codes that are listed, I believe directly affect the welfare of the child. The code of ethics will provide structure for me as I am growing, helping me make decisions that are considered to be the best practices versus an intuition.

The codes also serve as a historical timeline for BCBA's and the progression of ABA and allows us too not regress in history. The early start of applied behavior analysis was built on abuse and mistreatment of those with disabilities. There was no code of ethics or any ethical code of conduct that guided early therapist. Many people were mistreated and abused because of this. As ABA has progressed into what it is today, the code of ethics helps progress our practices, and treat our client with the highest form of dignity, or we are put at risk to lose our certification. The code has an emphasis on accountability that will hold this standard. Bailey et al states, " The code has an emphasis on accountability for our actions and keeping commitments to employers as well as clients and stakeholders" (Bailey et al. p.72).

The code gives clear expectations to how BCBA should conduct themselves with clients and stakeholders, the way that we practice, the way that we supervise RBT's, and criminal charges to name a few. Overall, the Code of Ethics will provide a guiding light for me as a BCBA.
