Cultural Psychology (Fourth Edition) 4th Edition by Steven J. Heine Group Projects – Psychology and Culture, Fall 2025
A Personal Perspective
For this project, you will work in groups of 4 students to interview each other about how your own cultural backgrounds and experiences have or have not affected you with respect to course topics. I will assign students to a group. However, each student will turn in their own paper. Each paper should have at leastfoursections:
1. Summary of a topic of psychological phenomenon discussed in class/the textbook. Each student will summarize a different topic or psychological phenomenonthat have we have discussed in class or that is in the textbook. You make pick any topic you like. Thissection of your papershould include:a. An introduction with a description of thetopic or phenomenon.
b. A discussion of the evidence discussed in class and/orthe textbookregarding cross-cultural variation or universality related tothetopic. You must describe and cite at least one research study. This can be a study that is cited in the textbook.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to: self-consistency, subjective vs. objective self-awareness, cognitive dissonance, the fundamental attribution error, analytic vs. holistic thinking styles, independent vs. interdependent self-concepts, entity vs. incremental theories of self, gender equality, language and thought, prevention vs. promotion orientation, sleeping arrangements, self-enhancement and self-serving biases, etc.
Note: Your topic includes all of the information related to it that we discussed in class. For example,if your topic is sleeping arrangements, this includes all of the different values that we studied and not just one (e.g., incest avoidance, respect for hierarchy, etc.).
2. Evidence from classmates. Interview and/or assess your group members (including him/her/their self) regarding how your own cultural backgrounds have affected each youwith respect to yourtopic and report your findings. You may use interview questions that you create, and/or one of the questionnaires, surveys, or experiments that we have discussed in class. You may also use a questionnaire, survey, or task that you find online. Anything you use that you did not create yourself, you need to cite and include in your reference list. This section of your paper should include:
a. A description of the methods you used, e.g., your interview questions or the survey or experiment that you used.
b. A description of your participants. Who are your group members? E.g., what are their genders, ages, ethnic/cultural identifications, and any other information that you think is relevant or important to know.
c. A description of your findings. How did each participant respond? This section can include figures, graphs, or tables that help to display your findings in addition to your written summary.
3. Compare and contrastthe results from the members of your group with one another andwith the evidence discussed in class/the textbook. Do your experiences argue for cultural variability or universality foryour topic? Do they agree or disagree with the research we discussed in class?
Your papers should be well-organized with an introduction, clear paragraphs in the body for each individual section, and a clear conclusion. You will be graded on both the content and style of your paper according to the rubric provided. Papers should be approximately5-6 pages double spaced (not including the references), 12-point Times New Roman font. However, this may vary depending on your topic and the activities/assessments that you have your classmates do.
