Introduction

Memory is a complex human process involving sensation, perception, cognition, and other neurological processes to encode, consolidate, and retrieve both implicit and explicit experiences. It plays a fundamental role in our daily lives, shaping our identities, guiding our decisions, and influencing our perceptions of the world.

Some of the resources curated to support your completion of this assessment will introduce you to the subject of memory: the theories, models, processes, and research methodologies used to learn about and understand it.

Other resources will focus on understanding knowledge representation and manipulation from a psychological perspective, which are essential for understanding how the human mind organizes and uses information, influencing a wide range of cognitive processes and practical applications, such as in education, engineering, and medicine, to name a few.

Remember the first time that you visited a new city and had to find your way around? You may know the basics that would allow you to navigate (that there are four cardinal directions and, perhaps, basic landmarks). Yet, navigating in a new city (despite all of your knowledge about spatial navigation) is incredibly difficult. Why are some cognitive processes so effortful while others are so effortful? These resources explore processes that are easy and difficult—and the crucial way that affective processing can impact cognition.

Scenario

Continue the mindset that you are a professional in your discipline and your are continuing to work toward understanding a concern for a population. For this assessment, you'll be looking at emotional factors that may occur for the population, and applying theory to understanding those emotions.

Additionally, you present research studies, their design, methods, and findings, and then apply the findings to understanding affective responses.

Finally, you consider ethical issues that may arise in addressing the concern, and search for relevant professional ethical principles and standards in working with the population to deal with the concern.

In your Week 7 assessment, you'll bring the information you have gathered during this and your previous assessment to create a presentation for those who work in your discipline.

Assessment Instructions

For this assessment, continue with the problem or concern you addressed in Assessment 1.

For this assessment address affective (emotional) factors.

Again, briefly describe the concern, population, and setting. Once you describe the setting, concern, and population, explain theories that can be applied to understanding and addressing emotional factors surrounding the concern. These may be learning theories, psychological theories, biological theories, or others. Apply the theories to create a better understanding of affective factors that may be relevant for the population in reference to the concern or problem.

Next, explore research on the subject. Search for scholarly articles that address emotional or affective factors related to the concern or problem. (You may want to use both terms—emotion and affect— when conducting your library or Google Scholar search).

Once you select the articles that are most relevant, describe the research design, methods of data collection, and the findings. Apply the findings to a better understanding of the population and concern. What was researched? What did the researchers find? How can it be applied to the population and concern you are addressing within your professional scope of practice?

Next, address ethics that may arise for professionals in your scope of practice when addressing or intervening in the concern. You may use the American Psychological Association's code, or a professional code that is more specific to your discipline if you are not in a psychology program. Refer to the Ethical Principles and Practices for Affective Factors reading list for a list of relevant resources.

Make sure that your sources are properly cited and referenced according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Refer to the Writing Center for guidance with citations as needed.

Check your spelling, grammar, and flow and cohesion of ideas.
