Overview

Behavior Analysis Scenario

As the behavior analyst in this elementary school, the first thing I would do is sit down with the teacher and ask for a detailed description of the student’s behavior and the contexts where it occurs (Lyons, 2021). I would review any existing documentation the teacher has, such as behavior notes, office referrals, work completion records, and communication logs with the family to see patterns in time of day, setting, and antecedents (Rollins College, 2021). From there, I would define the target behaviors in clear, observable terms (for example, “calls out without raising hand,” “leaves seat without permission,” or “does not begin independent work within 2 minutes”).

Next, I would schedule classroom observations during the times the teacher is most concerned about, using tools like ABC recording or simple frequency and duration counts to see what happens before and after the behaviors (Lyons, 2021). After collecting enough data to see patterns, I would meet with the teacher to share what I observed and collaborate on specific, positive goals (for example, increasing on-task behavior, appropriate requests for help, or following directions within a set time). Together, we would design an intervention that might include precorrection (reminding the student of expectations before tasks), visual supports, choice-making, and a simple reinforcement system using praise and small rewards for meeting clearly stated behavior criteria (Rollins College, 2021). I would also develop an easy progress-monitoring plan the teacher can realistically use.

In this role, there are clear limits to what I can do. I would explain to the teacher that I cannot diagnose disabilities, prescribe medication, or make decisions about special education eligibility; those responsibilities belong to other professionals on the team (Lyons, 2021). I am also bound by school policies, schedules, and the teacher’s capacity, so interventions must fit within the classroom routine rather than completely redesign it (Rollins College, 2021). Finally, I must ensure that any strategies are socially valid and acceptable to the teacher, family, and school, and that I stay within the ethical scope of practice for behavior analysts while collaborating with the broader school team (Lyons, 2021).
