Critical analysis of an application of negative reinforcement

Researchers and practitioners in psychology, much like those in most any field, benefit greatly by the work of others. By studying prior research in their areas of interest, psychologists can better understand how theories are applied in practice. This is especially true when examining case studies or similar types of research, whereby authors describe specific circumstances and the results of efforts to address those circumstances. For those hoping to replicate or apply lessons to similar circumstances, research studies can be invaluable tools.

Negative reinforcement is frequently the naturally occurring operation in the maintenance of problem behavior. In other words, escape from or avoidance of an unpleasant or undesired task is reinforcing. Negative reinforcement is used less frequently in treatment, however.

For this Assignment, you will identify a research study that applied concepts of negative reinforcement. You will analyze the research study and explain how negative reinforcement was applied.

To Prepare

  • Use the APA PsycInfo database link in this week’s Learning Resources to access, search for, and select a study that used negative reinforcement as a component of treatment (intervention).

Assignment (1–2 pages):

  • Provide general information about the study (i.e., title and authors).
  • Describe the study.
  • Explain how negative reinforcement was implemented.

Be sure to support your Assignment with specific references to behavior-analytic theory and research. In addition to the Learning Resources, search the Walden Library and/or the internet for peer-reviewed articles to support your Assignment. Use proper APA format and citations, including those in the Learning Resources.
