Introduction

Note: The assessments in this course follow the successive stages of lifespan development, so you are strongly encouraged to complete them in sequence.

Beginning as early as conception, both hereditary and environmental influences can affect the development of an individual. As you engage in your assessments, keep in mind that small influences can have a significant impact on a developing fetus. Hereditary diseases, genetics, teratogens, nutrition, and stress are all factors that can influence prenatal development, which in turn can have effects across the lifespan.

Once a child is born, the external environment begins to influence development in a huge way. Attachment is one aspect that has been given much attention as having emotional influence during this time. There are direct implications that attachment and temperament can have on the ability to successfully develop and maintain peer relationships into adulthood.

Psychologists in each area specialization should be prepared to employ evidence-based interventions to address challenges posed by the effects of early developmental concerns. As you review the literature and complete the learning assessment, consider the potential implications of early development for your professional direction. How might you apply your knowledge directly or indirectly to your areas of a professional interest? While early development may seem remote to your professional specialization, consider that the implications may be both direct and indirect. For instance, if you work in education, you will need to take into account how the permanent influences of early development can affect how a person learns. More indirectly, imagine you are an industrial psychologist working in the field. A female employee returns to work after maternity leave. She is withdrawn and appears tired. When she is referred for a consultation, you discover that the employee had contracted rubella during the first trimester of pregnancy, which caused her infant to be born with a heart defect. Would you be better able to support the employee if you were knowledgeable about the risk factors during pregnancy and environmental agents that could harm a fetus?

Overview

For this assessment, you will locate two scholarly articles on attachment from the Capella library and summarize them. The articles can be about attachment theory, attachment styles, attachment and its impact on development or relationships, etc. As long as the primary focus is on attachment and that they come from the Capella library. This gives you practice using the Capella library, practice reading and summarizing scholarly articles, and gives valuable information on human attachment and its role in development.

Note that for the first criterion on identifying scholarly articles, that at least one article will need to contain a research study where the authors of the article conducted the research (and are not reviewing someone else's research).

You will need to include the full references for the articles and a link for each to the Capella library. Check the link to ensure that it goes back to the library page. If no viable link is available, download, save, and attach the articles as PDFs with your submission, or provide a screenshot of the library page from where you found the article. You can place the screenshot on a Word document, save it and attach it with your submission. Your instructor will need to be able to access articles. Please do not go to the internet for the articles. The challenge or practice is for use of the Capella library.

If you need to take a screenshot, you can use the following steps:

  • On a PC: Use Windows Key+Shift+S (hold them all at the same time) and then highlight area you want to take a picture of). Paste it to where you want it as soon as you take the screenshot.
  • On a Mac: Use Shift+Command+4 (hold them all at the same time) and then highlight area you want to take a picture of). You screenshot will appear as a file on your desktop that can be inserted as a picture.
  • On a Chromebook: Use Ctrl+Shift+Show Window (hold them all at the same time) and then highlight area you want to take a picture of). Paste it to where you want it as soon as you take the screenshot.

You will then summarize the articles, highlighting the main ideas of the articles. Include a short introduction, a summary of the main points of the article, and a conclusion of the article. Then summarize the second article in the same format. You can use section headings to separate the summaries with one article summarized in one section and the second in another section.

Finally, include your personal thoughts about the information from the articles and include an application of the information that you gathered to either your personal or professional life.

You can learn more about the Capella Writing Standards in the Writing Center.

Instructions

Use Finding Scholarly Articles in the Capella Library to guide you in how to access the library and the databases relevant to psychology. The video also helps to guide you in placing the parameters you need to find articles on attachment. It is a good idea to follow along in the library with the video to help you in practicing the steps. The Finding Scholarly Articles in the Capella Library [PDF] file provides screenshots of the steps that you can download and save for future reference.

Choose two scholarly articles from the library on attachment. The topic can be any area of human attachment. Some examples are: how early attachment impacts relationship functioning later in life, genetic influences on attachment, attachment and temperament, attachment and anxiety, and attachment styles and leadership styles. These are just examples of endless possibilities.

Create a paper with a title page and in the body of the paper, include the following:

  • Summarize the main points of the article. Include enough detail in the summary that a person who has not read the article can get a good understanding of it from your description. This should take up most of one page and possibly into a second page. If the article is a research study, present the purpose of the research, the research methods, the findings, and the conclusions.
  • Summarize a second article in this same format.
  • Next, reflect on your thoughts about what you learned from the articles. For this part, you can write in first person. Discuss how this information can be applied personally or professionally.
  • Include a references page with the full APA style reference for the articles and include library links to the articles or other verification, such as a screenshot from the library or attach the article itself, so that your instructor can confirm the article.

Submission Guidelines

  • Format: Submit your summary of the articles as a Word document.
  • APA format: Follow APA guidelines for style and formatting, as well as for citing your resources in the body of your paper and listed alphabetically on the references page. Use the APA Paper Template [DOCX] and the following format to structure your paper. Use Academic Writer for guidance in citing sources and formatting your paper in proper APA style. See the Writing Center for more APA resources specific to your degree level.
  • Length: The content of your summary and application will be about 3–4 pages long.
  • References: Include a title page and a references page. The references page should include the full APA reference for the articles, including links to the articles.
  • Article Attachments: If there is not a viable link, include the articles as attachments along with your paper. Alternatively, you can attach screenshots of the articles in the library. This will confirm that it is from the Capella library. You will still need to include the full references on the References page of your paper in addition to the confirmation.

Note: In graduate-level and professional writing, you should minimize the use of direct quotes. Lengthy quotes do not count toward assessment minimums. It is your interpretation of the material and its application to practice that is assessed.
