CAMP 2 (Mandatory)

REALIZING MY TIMELINE AND PLANNING FOR SUCCESS

This assignment consists of compiling some of the information you’ve learned about yourself and careers in psychology through the semester. You will make references back to the start of the semester and the first CAMP completed (the CAREER TIMELINE) and add additional information gained from the exercises listed below:

Improving My Study Skills. View the “How to Get the Most Out of Studying” videos created by Dr. Stephen Chew of Samford University (http://www.samford.edu/departments/academic-success-center/how-to-study). There are five videos and it will take you approximately 35-40 minutes to watch them all. The purpose of these videos is to teach you some of the basic cognitive principles to understand in order to become a more effective learner. After watching the videos, you should note at least three things you learned about yourself as a learner and plan on using to optimize your learning.

Ways to reduce my stress. Go to ONE of the websites listed below. Read through the information and note at least three stressors you have along with three things you can do to decrease that stress and improve your overall health. Be sure to identify which of the sources you read using appropriate APA reference.

a. https://www.helpguide.org/articles/stress/stress-m...

b. https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stres...

c. https://psychcentral.com/stress/

d. https://www.stress.org/management-tips/

e. https://www.d.umn.edu/~rdavis/advise/notes/Stress_...

Academic Success Planning Checklist. Complete the Planning for Academic Success Checklist (Available on Blackboard), save it as a Word document and submit it with the other items required for this CAMP. You are strongly encouraged to keep a copy for yourself and use it as you progress in the program. This is meant to be a plan you can use to help realize your goals and succeed! At the end of the checklist is a GSU Psychology Student Success Scavenger Hunt. You might want to start on this part earlier in the term!

When you consider the items listed under Developing a Professional Demeanor. Identify 1 item from the To Do list or the NOT To Do list that surprised you. Explain how doing and not doing this behavior impact your professional demeanor.

Realizing my Timeline. Note at least two things you have done over the course of the semester which have either caused you to change or helped realize in some way the career timeline (CAMP 1) you completed at the start of the term. Just a short word document noting the changes will suffice here.

Planning for Academic Success Checklist

Complete this document, save it as a Word document and upload it to Blackboard under the correct tab by the due date posted. Keep a copy for yourself and use it to build towards success!

Advising

My advisor’s name is:

Advisor’s Email is:

General: Place an X next to the items where appropriate and identify relevant information.

I have met with my academic advisor at least once already.

I have completed and reviewed my Degree Audit. I understand what course I have left to complete my degree.

I know what I need to meet the general education requirements to graduate (or have already met them by having an AA or AS degree).

I have outlined a tentative schedule for myself for each term I have remaining.

I have checked and the courses I have listed on my tentative schedule are offered in the terms I want.

I plan on registering for courses as soon as possible so that I can be sure to get the courses I need.

If something happens to my schedule, I know I need to contact my advisor as soon as possible in order to request a substitution or approval to take something not on my study plan. If I do not, I realize it may not count towards my degree.

I know that I have to apply to graduate from the university. The deadline to apply to graduate for the term I plan on being eligible is _____________.

I know that if I take courses outside of Governors State University, I must seek approval from my advisor to ensure that the course is transferable and that the credit hours will be accepted.

I know that I can get Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint) through GSU as a student

Developing A Professional Demeanor: Use the following scale to answer these questions:

0=Never, 1=Rarely, 2=Sometimes, 3=Often, 4=Always

To Do Checklist: (Try to DO AS MANY OF THESE AS POSSIBLE!)

Attend presentations and programs sponsored by the department or college.

Go my professors’ office hours to discuss something from class that sparked interest or you need assistance on.

Rarely miss class.

I prepare for class by reading and outlining ahead as well as bringing questions I have with me.

Plan to and complete assignments before due date

Review assignment instructions early so I have time to ask questions

I try to show interest and remain attentive during classes.

I try to ask well-reasoned, well-formulated questions during class.

I try to network with faculty to gain mentorship and find research opportunities.

I will discuss any questions I have about my grades with my professor shortly after an assignment is returned to me.

Show respect for other students both inside and outside the class

Show respect for the course and the instructor

Routinely review posted announcements

Include your Name on Assignments

Include your course in all email communication with your Instructor

When emailing attachments, include information on what is in the attachment and what is to be reviewed

Always include citations when information is from a source

Not to do Checklist: (Try NOT DO ANY OF THESE!)

Consistently arrive late, leave early, or start packing up my books and notes before class is over.

Ask, “I missed last class, did I miss anything important?”

Ask for extra credit to avoid a failing grade

Ask to redo assignment due to a poor grade

Ask (repeatedly), “Is this going to be on the test?”

Hand in assignments late or miss exam.

Leave your cell phone (or laptop) on in class, answer it, play games, surf the net, or respond to email on it during class.

Wait until the due date (or after) to inform the professor of extenuating circumstances that prevented you from completing an assignment on time.

Complete work for other classes while in class

Take Exams on your Phone or Tablet

Submit assignments with Pages, ODT, or formats other than what was identified for the class

Submit assignments as shared links

Say that my computer won’t do that, so I did not think it was that important

Repeatedly dominate office or question time with personal needs and problems (your education is not time for free therapy!).

Roll your eyes, sneer, refuse to share notes with classmates, or huff/puff when asked to participate in a group activity.

After each exam or assignment, routinely and publicly nit-pick over answers to test questions, trying to get extra points.

Ask “Can you tell me why I got a grade” before you look at feedback

Ask for an incomplete in a class for the sole purpose of preventing a low grade.

Wait until the end of the semester to argue your grade with a professor based on old assignments.

Submit assignments that consist mainly of quotes.

Ask instructor to record or provide an online option so you don’t have to come to class when class is scheduled on campus

Study Skills (Above and Beyond Steven Chew Videos):

Use the following scale to answer these questions:

0=Don’t do and do not plan on doing this

1=Don’t do but plan on starting

2=Have started doing and plan on continuing

3=Do sometimes, but need to do more often

4=Currently do and plan on continuing

Improve my note taking strategies. Consider taking a workshop from the Academic Resource Center.

Take notes while reading my texts. Bring in questions that I have to the next class or contact the instructor (email, discussion board, or office hours).

Study for tests and quizzes early and often, avoiding cramming.

Create a well defined study space for myself.

Schedule study time (minimum 3 hrs per class per week) and try to stick to that schedule/planner.

Check myself: Most students overestimate the amount of time spent studying. Keep a log of your study times and match to your schedule.

Set up your space and learning conditions for how you know you learn best. Use the Chew videos!

On your planner, be sure to put in due dates for the whole semester and give yourself advance notice to start preparing.

Use your planner to create a weekly “to do” list.

Allow some time to play and de-stress.

Learn all you can from returned tests and papers….don’t keep repeating a mistake!
