Unit 7 Discussion Prompt: Earl (28 years old) comes in for counseling at the request of his parents and other friends. Although Earl does not think there is anything wrong with him, his mother has offered to pay for counseling, and he feels obligated to go. As the session begins, Earl begins to talk about his love and relationship with a popular TV news personality. He says that this news anchor (Maria) is also in love with him and sends him secret messages throughout her newscast on TV. When asked about details, the counselor learns that he has never actually met Maria and there has never been formal communication between the two, other than the messages that Earl claims is sent to him through the television. Other than his rigidly held belief, Earl does not exhibit any other psychotic symptoms and seems to function normally at his job and at home.
Based on your reading of the DSM this week, what do you think is Earl’s likely diagnosis? Provide evidence from the case study to support your answer.
Unit 8 Responses to Discussion Prompt: Peer responses are due this week. Please ensure that you are providing two responses this week by Sunday.
