Drugs in American Society
Write in APA 7
Question 1: (2-page answer - 2 APA7 resource) Compare media portrayals of alcohol versus illicit drugs over the past 30 years. Include references to two academic or journalistic sources.
Question 2: (3-page answer - 2 APA7 resource ) How does the Biopsychosocial Model explain the complexity of addiction? In what ways does this model differ from other perspectives (e.g., moral, medical, or purely behavioral)? How do you personally or professionally relate to the ideas presented in this model? You may draw from real-world observations, relevant coursework, media representations, or other meaningful experiences
Question 3: (2 page answer – 2 APA7 resource)
discuss the consequence and benefits to society of the use, abuse, misuse, and overuse of morphine. Students may include a brief history of the drug, it's licit or illicit pathways, impact on individuals, families, and society.
Question 4: (4 page answer - 3 APA7 resource) (Use attached Study Guide for reference)
Background: you have been given an unlimited amount of funding to evaluate the impact of a mentoring program designed to reduce substance abuse in teenagers. The mentoring program is new, and it is scheduled to be implemented with 9th grade students in four different schools. Each school has approximately 500 9th grade students and you have been given free access to all students from all four schools. Furthermore, all their parents have agreed to participate in the evaluation. The mentoring program involves matching adult mentors to youth in their efforts to stay drug free and avoid other problem behaviors. You have been given three years to complete your evaluation and make a report to the funding agency regarding the success of the program. The funding agency specifically wants to know the following:
Does the mentoring program lead to reduced rates of drug use?
How long do any effects “last” in terms of reduced drug use?
Are their reductions in other problem behaviors than can be attributed to the mentoring project?
If so, how are they related to reductions in drug use?
Which is more important, the amount of time spent with mentors, or the types of activities/interactions that youth experience with their mentor?
Please explain how you will answer these questions in a complete investigation. Make sure you address issues related to:
Sampling: How do you determine appropriate sample size? What techniques would you use to derive a sample? What might you do to assure that the sample is representative of the population?
Measurement: How would you select measures to be used from existing research? Discuss how you would approach developing a new measurement that would be reliable and valid?
Method & Design: Include a brief description of assessment/data collection timeline and phases, data collection techniques, implementation of the intervention, and any other relevant issues. Outline the design. Describe any measures that will be taken in staffing to ensure the integrity of the design.
Analysis: Discuss the statistical analysis that will be used and comment on the type of conclusions that can be drawn from these analyses. Make sure you address all research questions/hypotheses.
In describing your approach in each of these four areas, please discuss potential “real world” or logistical problems that might limit your approach and/or limit conclusions that can be drawn from your study.
