(see also the variety of Tiger Mom articles on New York Times online) ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION This assessment is designed to provide students the opportunity to present a coherent, evidence-based argument about a current issue in developmental psychology. Being able to critically evaluate academic literature and formulate a persuasive position is an important skill to develop as a psychologist and in the workplace. Students will be required to choose a topic from the list provided below. The research essay questions are based on some of the ‘decisions’ that must be made at different stages in a person’s life. To understand these decisions in context you will need to complete the Human Development Simulation (see below for more information). Past students have found it useful to do this simulation to help them decide which essay topic or stage of life they are most interested in writing about. Since this assessment is an essay, it must include: o an introduction, main body, and conclusion. You may use your own title and sub-headings if it helps with structure. An abstract is optional. o evidence-based information, using peer-reviewed journal articles (not personal judgement, ‘internet facts’, or opinion). This means in-text citations and references must be included. Failure to include in-text citations and references will result in a capped mark of 50%. o complete, accurate in-text citations and referencing in APA format. To ensure your work is APA consistent, check https://libguides.murdoch.edu.au/APA Integrating research findings with your main points is an important part of this essay. Use findings from relevant research literature to support your arguments. Show that you can compare and contrast relevant research to arrive at an informed conclusion. GUIDELINES for SUCCESS Essay Tips • Do elaborate and discuss research findings relevant to the issue. • Do use topic sentences to structure your main arguments. At the end of a paragraph or main argument, use a summary sentence to anchor it back to your point - keep asking yourself the ‘so what’ question – why do you want your reader to know this, why is it relevant to your argument and the essay question? • Do use full sentences. Do not use dot points in your essay. • Do use objective, non-biased language. Avoid colloquial and emotional language, and personal judgment or opinion.
