Observational Techniques

Observational Techniques

In the development of single-subject research, assessment is of paramount importance. It acts as the basis for understanding target behavior and developing appropriate interventions. The accuracy of an assessment of behavior depends on a number of things, including the technique used for measuring the behavior. As it turns out, the best observational technique is dependent on the behavior itself.

For this Discussion, you will evaluate observational techniques. You will identify an example of a behavior that is best measured using each of the three measurement methods provided and explain why each of the measurements is best for the specified behavior.

To Prepare

  • Review the Learning Resources for this week, including the required weekly media programs, to develop an understanding of observational techniques.
  • Post an example of a behavior that is best measured using each of the following techniques:
    • Frequency/rate
    • Duration
    • Latency
Explain why each of these measurements is the best method for the behavior you identified (e.g., aggressive behavior, eye contact, off task, social responsiveness).

Note: It is mandatory for you to review all media for this week prior to completing this Discussion.
