3770 ASSESS 2

3770 ASSESS 2

Write a 3–5 page paper applying learning and incentive theories of motivation to behaviors from the scenario and to your own learning.

This paper will be in two parts. Part 1 will continue the scenario from the class, whereas Part 2 will allow you to reflect on what you’ve learned and apply it to your own learning.

Introduction

Why do people react differently to what appears to be the same stimulus? The biological and physiological theories may not offer a detailed enough explanation. The learning theories of motivation take into account an individual's previous experiences. Incentive theories, on the other hand, focus on anticipation of what may come.

Throughout this course, each assessment takes place within an evolving scenario. The scenario provides opportunity to engage with different aspects of the motivational process and analyze or reflect on the experience. For the best experience (staying within the story's timeline), complete the assessments in order.

Preparation

This paper will be in two parts. Part 1 will continue the scenario from the class, whereas Part 2 will allow you to reflect on what you’ve learned and apply it to your own learning.

Scenario

It’s been three days, and Highend Hotel (and most of Atlanta) remains without power. You are wearing the last clean clothes from your suitcase. Worse than the lack of clean clothes is that the smell of many people who cannot shower now permeates the hotel. The daily temperatures have been in the upper 80s, and you know you’ll be drenched in sweat by the afternoon.

The National Guard has been bringing in supplies and shows up daily with a truck full of food. When they show up, people swarm the vehicle. You’ve noticed some people try to get in line several times to gather more than their fair share. Others hang back and try to reach the truck without getting in anyone’s way. Yet others will push through the crowd, get their food, and push back toward their rooms.

24 hours later…

After four days without power, no one has any charge left in their electronic devices. You find yourself trying to stay busy without a cell phone, laptop, TV, or any of the usual distractions. Some of the guests have started group activities in the conference room, everything from sing-a-longs to charades to yoga. Other guests have volunteered to help the remaining hotel staff with their duties.

Unfortunately, some of the guests continue to complain about the situation and make unreasonable demands of hotel staff (and sometimes other guests). There have even been reports of theft and physical assaults.

The hotel staff would like help building a plan to motivate better behavior in their guests.

Step 1: Choose one of the following:

  1. Getting guests to line up and wait patiently for the National Guard food truck.
  2. Decreasing or eliminating bullying behavior when the food truck arrives.
  3. Getting guests to participate in healthy activities during the day.
  4. Reducing or eliminating criminal behavior such as theft and assaults.

Step 2: Choose a learning or incentive theory of motivation.

positive incentive theory of motivation

Step 3: In the Capella University Library, find three peer-reviewed journal articles related to your topic and/or theory of motivation. You may consider using the Capella University Library Undergraduate Research Guide to help you in your search.
