Psychology Question

Psychology Question

survey_codebook.pdf

In this assignment, you will practice creating research questions and hypotheses based on provided datasets for Part I. For Part II, you review the literature to find examples of research questions and hypotheses in your related field. This will help you develop your skills in formulating research questions, generating hypotheses, and understanding how researchers in your field use statistical methods.

Datasets:

From the following two datasets, choose the dataset that is most closely related to your interest and explore it to become familiar with the variables and data structure. Open the database for the statistical program you are using:

  • SPSS:

survey.sav

  • Jamovi:

survey.omv

  • The data set contains information from a study that was designed to explore the factors that impact respondents' psychological adjustment and well-being. The survey contained a variety of validated scales measuring constructs that the extensive literature on stress and coping suggests influence people's experience of stress. The scales measured self-esteem, optimism, perceptions of control, perceived stress, positive and negative affect, and life satisfaction. A scale was also included that measured people's tendency to present themselves in a favorable or socially desirable manner. The survey was distributed to members of the general public in Melbourne, Australia, and surrounding districts.
  • SPSS:

experim.sav

  • Jamovi:

experim.omv

  • This data set refers to a fictitious study that involves testing the impact of two different types of interventions in helping students cope with their anxiety concerning a forthcoming statistics course. Students were divided into two equal groups and asked to complete a number of scales (Time 1). These included a Fear of Statistics test, a Confidence in Coping with Statistics scale, and a Depression scale. One group (Group 1) was given a number of sessions designed to improve mathematical skills, and the second group (Group 2) was subjected to a program designed to build confidence in the ability to cope with statistics. After the program (Time 2) they were again asked to complete the same scales that they completed before the program. They were also followed up three months later (Time 3). Their performance on a statistics exam was also measured.

Part I:

Complete the following:

  1. Formulate your research questions: Based on your chosen dataset, develop two research questions that involve examining relationships between two or more variables. Be specific and clear in stating your research questions and identifying the variables involved.
  2. Create null and alternative hypotheses: For each research question, formulate a null hypothesis (H0) and an alternative hypothesis (H1). Clearly state both hypotheses for each question, ensuring they are testable and relevant to your research questions.

Part II:

Search the literature in your related area of interest to find two published articles that use statistical methods to answer research questions and/or test hypotheses. Make sure the articles are relevant to your field and that the research questions and hypotheses are clearly stated. Provide the full citation for each article in APA format.

Summarize the articles' research questions and hypotheses. For each selected article, write a summary (~1 paragraph) that includes the following:

  • The main research question or hypothesis the article addresses.
  • The statistical method(s) used to answer the question or test the hypothesis.
  • A brief explanation of the study's results and conclusions.
  • Submit the complete report with both Parts I and II.

Use peer-reviewed journals, scholarly source (NOT the course textbook) for the information you are paraphrasing and citing.
