Numerous theories and modalities of child and adolescent therapy have been presented in this module. This is included in readings about evidence-based treatments like interpersonal psychotherapy for adolescence and dialectical behavior therapy. Theoretical perspectives, like cognitive behavioral and family systems theory were explored in this module. The readings and lectures covered several theories of therapeutic change that are effective with children like acceptance and commitment therapy.
In this assignment, you will integrate the theories and modalities you have learned into your own personal theory of child and adolescent psychotherapy. You will be working with many different disorders and family structures as a therapist in the future. Therefore, you must think about your own personal style and what type of therapy you would like to utilize. You also want to think about the type of clients you might want to work with in your practicum, and intern ships. Think about the theories and practices you have learned about. Write a 100 to 300-word paper describing your own personal theory of change. Your personal theory will integrate the evidence based treatments in the course readings and lectures. You will want to cover several areas of the case conceptualization you discussed in Module 1. If a child believes they're a loser and has negative self talk, then you might approach the case with cognitive restructuring or CBT. If there's a lack of emotional regulation skills and interpersonal skills, then you might choose to use DBT to help the child. If there are interactional patterns and interpersonal issues from the family that are impacting the teenagers development and individuation, you might want to use interpersonal psychotherapy for adolescents. This paper will basically construct the rationale for your use of the theory or modality you want to use. There may be developmental reasons for using a certain theory. For instance, attachment theory might be useful for working with caretakers, and very young children. You do not have to only choose theories that are fully evidence-based with random controlled studies. You may use theories that the textbook and lectures indicate are only promising theories with some evidence. Please include at least two peer-reviewed references regarding your conclusions.
