Introduction
People grow best in different places and situations, and what works well for one person may not be the same for someone else. Life is not always a simple path—there are often surprises and changes along the way. As we get older, we experience many changes, and certain moments in life are especially important for growth. People respond to the expectations of their family, friends, and background in different ways at different ages. Life experiences can vary greatly depending on who someone is and where they come from.

These are called parenthetical citations. Here are some important rules to follow:- Use a citation anytime you share a fact that is not your own opinion or experience.
- A citation must include the author's last name and the year of publication.
- Put a comma between the author's name and the year.
- If you're citing a book or a quote, include a page number. If there is no page number, use a paragraph numberinstead.
- When citing two authors, use & instead of the word and.

Writing: Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing is an important writing skill. We recommend paraphrasing instead of using quotes because:- It makes your writing smoother and easier to understand.
- It shows that you truly understand the information.
Basics of Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing starts with three simple steps:- Read the source carefully.
- Pick the part you want to paraphrase—usually a sentence or two. To do this, think about what information you need for your assessment. Know your main idea and key points, then find facts that support them.
- Make sure you understand what you read. Look up words you don’t know and use your textbook or other sources to help with new ideas. Once you understand it, use the paraphrasing techniques you learn in this course.
- Look away from the source and write down what you think it means.
- Compare what you wrote to the original source. Look for: (a) accuracy, and (b) that it uses different words and sentence structure.
- Cite your paraphrase.
