Relational Dynamics in Recovery
Topic: Relational Dynamics in Recovery: When Attachment meets Addiction
Abstract: This poster examines relational dynamics among couples engaged in recovery from substance use and explores implications for treatment engagement, relapse risk, and sustained recovery. Recovery within intimate partnerships presents unique challenges, as attachment styles, communication patterns, power dynamics, and cultural and gendered expectations can either support or undermine recovery efforts. A mixed-methods study is proposed, integrating standardized measures of attachment security, relationship conflict, treatment engagement, relapse occurrence, and group cohesion with observational data of couple interactions within treatment settings. The proposed framework examines how relational processes shape individual and shared recovery trajectories. It is hypothesized that couples characterized by secure attachment and supportive relational behaviors will demonstrate greater treatment engagement and lower relapse rates, whereas couples exhibiting conflictual, enmeshed, or maladaptive interaction patterns may experience poorer clinical outcomes. Protective relational factors are expected to include emotional attunement, mutual accountability, and adaptive boundary-setting. Conclusions emphasize the importance of assessing couple-level dynamics in substance use treatment. Clinical implications highlight the need for attachment-informed, culturally responsive, and gender-sensitive interventions that address relational patterns, reduce relapse vulnerability, and support both individual and relational recovery.
