Emergent Relations and Generative Learning

Emergent Relations and Generative Learning

This week's readings and tutorials provide you with a continued investigation of stimulus control via emergent relations (aka derived stimulus relations) and how these relations contribute to generative learning and cognition of an individual. Considering your own experiences, either personal or professional, give an example of how mutual entailment, combinatorial entailment, and transformation of function may have contributed to that learning experience and any generative effects. You may also choose to include a visual representation (via a Word document or PowerPoint slides) of each relation with a brief description of that relation and attach to your discussion posting.

Review two of your classmate's responses using following ideas as a guide:

  • Review the emergent relations presented and note whether the relations are discussed accurately and extend beyond basic stimulus equivalence concepts. Provide feedback or alternate suggestions for consideration.
  • Provide feedback on the notion of the generative learning that is discussed.
  • Ask at least one thoughtful follow up question.
READING AND RESOURCES

Emergent Relations and Generative Learning

Read the following chapter in your text:

  • Review Chapter 19 in Cooper, Heron, & Heward’s Applied Behavior Analysis

Read the following articles which offer some “classic” perspectives on Applied Behavior Analysis, along with articles that explore more modern applications:

Derived stimulus relations and their role in a behavior-analytic account of human language and cognition. Barnes-Holmes et al. (2017)

Derived relational responding as the fundamental element in human language. In Learning RFT: An Introduction to Relational Frame Theory and Its Clinical Application Törneke (2010)

Skinner and Relational Frame Theory: Integrating units of analysis on a continuum of complexity. Perez (2023)

Derived relational responding and generative language: Applications for future directions for teaching individuals with autism spectrum disorders.Ming et al. (2014)

Derived relational responding and transformations of function in children: A review of applied behavior-analytic journals. Belisleet al (2022)

SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL:

While there are no CBA Modules assigned to this unit, the following modules are associated with Unit 9 content:

  • B.21 Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6

Review the key terms and concepts that are essential for the field of Applied Behavior Analysis.
