BA525 U3 discussion
Measuring Behavior in Basic Research Settings
Accurate and valid measurement of behavior is an essential foundation for the scientific analysis of behavior. This is particularly true when we consider the translation of applied methods for practice from basic research
For this discussion, please complete the following:
- Briefly describe the concept of “validity.”
- Then define ‘operational definition’. What makes an operational definition effective and how does an effective operational definition support accuracy and validity in applied behavior analytic research and practice?
- Next differentiate direct from indirect measures and give examples of each, being sure to consider what circumstances might make specific measurement strategies more or less appropriate.
- Finally, review some possible sources of error and bias in measurement and discuss strategies for reducing these.
- Be sure that you are using your course readings throughout to support your analysis
Review two of your classmates' responses, using the following ideas as a guide:
- Is the concept of validity completely and clearly described as pertains to the scientific analysis of behavior?
- Are the components of effective operational definitions developed with precision and clarity?
- Will strategies presented effectively reduce possible sources of bias and error in measurement?
- Ask at least one thoughtful follow-up question.
