Assignment Overview

Culture is expressed in countless ways—through art, rituals, language, food, clothing, music, body language, and media. This assignment invites you to explore how everyday cultural practices or symbols are portrayed and shared through online media.

Assignment Instructions

1. Select a YouTube Video

  • Find a short YouTube video (no longer than 5-10 minutes) that focuses on a specific cultural practice, tradition, or belief system.
    • The video should depict a distinct aspect of culture (e.g., wedding customs, language use, food traditions, rituals, clothing, body language, holidays, etc.).
    • Avoid generic or documentary-style overviews—choose something meaningful, personal, or specific.
  • 2. Watch and Reflect

  • Observe the visuals, sounds, and interactions in the video.
    • Think critically about how culture is being represented or performed.
  • 3. Write a Reflection (2–3 pages)

Organize your reflection under the following headings:

    A. Video Summary

  • Provide the title, YouTube link, and a brief summary (2–4 sentences) of what the video shows.
    • Identify the cultural group or context being represented.
  • B. Expression of Culture

  • Discuss how the video reflects cultural values, practices, or beliefs.
    • Describe which cultural dimensions are visible (e.g., individualism vs. collectivism, high-context vs. low-context, power distance, spirituality, gender roles, etc.).
    • Use at least two key concepts from course readings or lectures to support your analysis.
  • C. Personal Reflection

  • Why did this video resonate with you?
    • Did it relate to your own cultural background or challenge your understanding of another culture?
    • What did you find most surprising or thought-provoking?
  • (Include in the submission the link to the video) (20 points)
