BA525 Unit 4 Discussion

Pavlovian Conditioning and its Impact on Operant Behavior

It is likely that you have previously been introduced to Pavlovian conditioning (also known as classical or respondent conditioning) In this discussion, you will have the opportunity to review the Pavlovian learning paradigm, its origins in the laboratory setting, and to consider deeper implications for the formation and modification of complex behavior.

  • Start by briefly summarizing the process of Pavlovian conditioning, using Pavlov’s (1927) early experiment with dogs to review each component in the learning process.
  • Then, describe some more recent developments or findings since that early research that have further revealed or elucidated the processes underlying Pavlovian conditioning.
  • Go on to describe the ways in which Pavlovian and operant conditioning may interact to produce and modify behavior, specifically describing processes involved in avoidance learning and approach learning.
  • Finally, conclude by developing one hypothetical example to illustrate avoidance learning and another to illustrate approach learning.
  • Be sure that you are using your course readings throughout to support your analysis.

Review two of your classmates' responses, using the following ideas as a guide:

  • Is the Pavlovian paradigm completely and accurately described?
  • Does discussion of recent research in Pavlovian conditioning promote a deeper understanding?
  • Do the examples of approach and avoidance learning elucidate the relationship between Pavlovian and operant conditioning?
  • Ask at least one thoughtful follow-up question.
