Review Table 9.1: Ten Ways to Build Resilience located on page 569 of the text Learning the Language of Addiction Counseling.
Ten Ways to Build Resilience
Make connections. Avoid seeing crises as insurmountable problems. Accept that change is a part of living. Move toward your goals. Take decisive actions. Look for opportunities for self-discovery. Nurture a positive view of yourself. Keep things in perspective. Maintain a hopeful outlook. Take care of yourself.
Reflect on a time of challenge/stress in your life in which you were particularly resilient. Which, if any, of the 10 approaches included in Table 9.1 did you find most relevant to your resilience competency? Is there a specific approach among the 10 that resonates most strongly with you, and that you believe will be beneficial to cultivate to further strengthen your resilience and ability to manage future stressors? Is this an approach that you can envision incorporating in your substance abuse counseling?
Prepare an approximately 250-word self-assessment on the above.
NOTE: As reflected in the grading rubric, you will not be evaluated on the content of your response, but rather upon your critical thinking and depth of self-assessment.
