PSY2060 Research Methods APA style in-text citation
Instructions
Peer-Review - Using the South University Online Library, find two peer-reviewed articles that are relevant to the research topic you selected in W1 Assignment 2. For each, explain why it is relevant to your research; identify the different sections of it; summarize it in your own words; identify the experimental hypothesis and null hypothesis. Use APA style format, with in-text citation. Be sure to correctly write the references.

Below is my assignment from week 1, my research topic is Jewelry.
“Basic and Applied Research on Jewelry Preferences
Introduction
The jewelry industry is an excellent subject to study the psychology of since diamonds, pearls, gold, and silver are not just decorative devices. Their associations with love, beauty, success, culture, family memories, and social status are among the things that people associate them with. Products may have a way of conveying identity and individual principles in consumer behavior (Solomon, 2020). In this paper, the scientific method has been applied to formulate two research studies on jewelry preferences. The former is basic research, as it tries to find out the meaning. The second is applied research since it aims to solve a practical marketing problem.
Using the Scientific Method
The two studies will be conducted scientifically. All studies have a research question, a testable hypothesis, variables, participants, a gathering of data, result analysis, and conclusions. As demonstrated by Cozby and Bates (2020), behavioral research envelops questions, hypotheses, variables, measurement, surveys, experiments, ethics, and reporting. Morling (2021) adds that the characteristics of good research include considerations of construct validity, internal validity, external validity, and statistical validity. These concepts aid in making research studies structured, ethical, and evidence-based.
Basic Research Study
Research question. How do adults psychologically interpret diamonds, pearls, gold, and silver?
Hypothesis. Adults will associate diamonds and gold with romance, money, success, and prestige, and pearls and silver with style, tradition, simplicity, and individuality.
Purpose. Such a fundamental research project will contribute to more knowledge regarding how individuals perceive emotional and social significance associated with jewelry. It does not aim to address a current business issue. Rather, it assists in understanding why some jewelry types can be considered special to some people rather than others. According to Solomon (2020), consumption decisions may be connected to lifestyle, identity, or social status, and this is why jewelry is an effective subject of psychological research.
Participants. The study will include one hundred adult respondents aged 18 and above. They will belong to various age groups, sexes, and incomes. A wide sample is valuable, as the meaning of jewelry can vary due to culture, age, income, and personal experience.
Method and procedure. The researcher will adopt an online survey. The researcher will show the participants pictures of four types of jewelry: diamond rings, pearl necklaces, gold bracelets, and silver earrings. They will rate the item afterward in terms of beautiful, romantic, successful, traditional, simple, expensive, confident, and meaningful. They will also respond to one brief question: What is this type of jewelry to you?
Variables and data collection. Jewelry type is the independent variable. It has dependent variables of emotional meaning and social meaning ratings. Rating scales will be used to provide quantitative data, and written answers will be used to provide qualitative data. Predicted results could be that diamonds and gold score higher on wealth and success, whereas pearls and silver score higher on elegance and simplicity. The research is fundamental, as it develops knowledge regarding human perception and significance.
Applied Research Study
Research question. Which jewelry advertisement creates the strongest buying interest among customers?
Hypothesis. Advertisements that are based on emotions and identity will generate a greater purchase interest compared to price-only advertisements.
Purpose. This will be a practical research study in solving a marketing problem. Jewelry companies must grasp how emotional messages, luxury/status messages, or discount messages will resonate more deeply with customers. Solomon (2020) explains the impact of status symbol and lifestyle marketing on consumer choice. Such a notion would especially apply to items such as diamonds, gold, pearls, and silver, as the products would likely indicate taste and value along with identity.
Participants. The study will include twelve adults who have purchased jewelry or plan to purchase it in the future. The participants are brought on board through the internet. Random assignment will be employed with the purpose of giving everyone an equal opportunity to view one of the types of advertisements. Random assignment can be used to enhance internal validity in testing a causal claim (Morling, 2021).
Method and procedure. There are three groups of participants that are randomly selected. Group one will be shown an emotive ad that will introduce jewelry as a token of love and memory. The luxury/status advert will be offered to group two as an image of jewelry that is a demonstration of success and beauty. Group three will be shown an advertisement focused on price, highlighting affordable discounts. Participants will evaluate their interest in purchasing the product, perceived value, brand trust, and potential propagation recommendation after watching the advertisement.
Variables and data collection. The independent variable is the type of advertisement. The dependent variables will be purchase interest, perceived value, brand trust, and likelihood of recommendation. The researcher will make comparisons between average ratings within the three groups. The anticipated outcomes can include that emotional and identity-based messages form greater customer interest as compared to price-only messages. Jewelry retailers will utilize the work to enhance advertising, product positioning, and consumer interactions.
Ethical Considerations
The two studies will have ethical research practices. Knowledgable consent is obtained, and the participants will be invited to join. The intent of the study, the time needed, and their right to withdraw at any time will be explained to them. There will be no privately gathered financial information. The questionnaires will not coerce the respondents to purchase jewelry. Reported data will be in the form of group results and not individual. This secures privacy and minimizes risk.
Conclusion
Conclusively, both basic and applied studies can be involved in the study of jewelry. The fundamental research investigates the way in which individuals perceive diamonds, pearls, gold, and silver emotionally and socially. Researchers conduct practical experiments to determine how certain types of ads contribute to buying interest. In both studies, the scientific method is applied to formulate clear questions, hypotheses, variables, methods, and expected results. They all demonstrate that jewelry is not about fashion or beauty. It is also related to identity, meaning, status, and consumer decision-making. This enhances the understanding, practicality, and credibility of the results.
