Mindful Intervention Proposal
BACKGROUND
The purpose of this activity is to design a small-scale Mindfulness Intervention to reduce PTSD symptoms among survivors of human trafficking. This research and implementation project has been funded by the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences at Arizona State University, through it's Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activities grant program.
Goal 4 of the Funded Project:
4) Developing a trauma-focused mentorship curriculum module to address PTSD symptoms. Group meetings will involve activities and discussions that promote self-esteem, social support, and modeling healthy relationships, as well as other topics based on the needs of mentees. In addition, we will design a targeted curriculum module to address symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, including feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated, emotional reactivity, social withdrawal, and hypervigilance. The curriculum will be developed based on findings from studies on sensory processing sensitivity (e.g., Pluess & Boniwell, 2015), and will involve skills-based training on: 1) self-care, 2) identifying feelings, 3) emotion regulation, and 4) mindfulness.
Note: You do NOT need to become an expert in the dynamics of human trafficking. Rather, focus on *recovery, *advocacy, *growth, *well-being, and *community service.
We are all working toward the collective goal of improving the lives of others.
INSTRUCTIONS: INITIAL STEPS
Review literature related to your proposed intervention
Your research proposal must have adequate justification based on existing literature. You are required to include at least 5 primary research, meta-analyses, or review articles (if not more) to fully understand 'the problem' (i.e., the behaviors the intervention is designed to address), the population, as well as appropriate methods for implementing the intervention. You are producing a professional-grade, scholarly product and your presentation should reflect a graduate-level understanding of substantiating your argument with prior theoretical or empirical work.
When you find appropriate references, please consider posting them on the course Yellowdig Thread, using appropriate Topic tags, so we are collectively building a repository of resources for this project.
***The 5 main articles you will use will have to be peer-reviewed articles: primary research, meta-analysis, or a review. You can use additional resources as well to add to or enhance the topic of discussion on top of the main group of articles you are using once you have met the 5 minimum article requirements.
TOPIC
As indicated in Goal 4 listed above, the purpose of this intervention is to reduce a specific symptoms of PTSD and integrate a skill. You may select an individual outcome, or a couple, but your intervention must be designed in such a way to decrease symptoms and increase skills. Your intervention will be more effective if it is designed to a target a population.
You will choose ONE or TWO of these PTSD symptoms to reduce:
- Feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated
- Emotional reactivity
- Social withdrawal
- Hypervigilance
You will choose ONE or TWO of these skills to integrate:
- Self-care
- Identifying feelings
- Emotion regulation
Choose an intervention method
Your intervention must apply Mindfulness concepts covered in this course. You may use existing Mindfulness interventions, modify established Mindfulness interventions, or create your own. You will need to describe specifically the methods and procedure for implementing your intervention with adequate detail. Think of it as a recipe: 1) activity(/-ies), 2) materials (any handouts/worksheets/notebooks/apps/devices), 3) detailed steps to complete the intervention. Consider the setting, frequency, and duration. A central goal is to develop an intervention that will work with our specific population: trafficking survivors. You may also consider reviewing research the effects of trauma and/or substance addiction and incorporate them into your intervention.
Choose a method of evaluating your intervention
We must be able to measure a change in the outcome(s) you have selected. Note that the funded project is already using several measures as part of the larger project, including: 1) retention (attendance); 2) substance use (CAGE-AID Questionnaire); 3) perceived safety (Human Insecurity Scale; HIS); and 4) well-being (World Health Organization-5; WHO-5). The current measures can be reviewed in the file below. I strongly urge you to design your intervention in such a way that it can be measured with these scales. If you elect to include a different scale you read about in your articles, you may. Just be sure to email me about it.

(Introduction, Methods, Discussion)INSTRUCTIONS: CREATE YOUR PRESENTATION
Please review the VoiceThread tutorial in the Assessment Details module before creating your presentation.
Create Your Presentation
Using the CREATE link in Module 5, create a narrated PowerPoint presentation to share your mindfulness intervention research proposal. Your presentation should be no less than 15 minutes.
Format to follow for presentation
- Title Slide – Topic & Author
- Background, & Significance of the topic: minimum 4 slides (can have more) -
- Begin with background about human trafficking, including prevalence/statistics.
- Discuss the significance of the issue: Detrimental effects of human trafficking on individuals. What impact does trafficking have on a survivor?
- What population and type of trafficking is your presentation focusing on? Forced Labor trafficking, Forced Child Labor, Sex Trafficking, Child Sex Trafficking, or Domestic Servitude. Is your intervention aimed at women/girls, men/boys, or both?
- A statement of your chosen symptom of PTSD to reduce and integration of life skill your intervention is designed to address.
- Include graphics for visual representation where you feel it would enhance the presentation in this section.
- A description of the methods and procedure required to implement your intervention: minimum 5 slides (can have more)
- If you have opted to design an intervention with an alternative population, describe the population you have selected, including any key characteristics which the intervention is designed to address
- Identify the specific outcome(s) your intervention will address
- List the materials required to conduct the intervention research
- Provide a detailed description of the procedure for implementing the intervention (e.g., Who implements it? What happens during the implementation process? How often does each intervention occur and for how long)?
- Include graphics for visual representation where you feel it would enhance the presentation in this section.
- A summary of your anticipated findings, any foreseeable problems with the intervention design, and potential solutions. Minimum 5 slides (can have more)
- Describe how your intervention will be evaluated. That is, how will you know if your intervention is successful?
- Provide a specific estimate of the effect you expect to see.
- Identify limitations or concerns that may come up in implementing your specific proposal. Limitations do not disqualify your proposal but rather indicate critical thinking about conducting research. You may also propose solutions for any limitations or concerns you identify.
- Conclusion: Essentially what does all this say and what does it mean? What valuable knowledge have you gained and how is that useful for the community?
- Include graphics for visual representation where you feel it would enhance the presentation in this section.
- Reference Slide: References in APA format. As many slides as necessary.
Your presentation slides should look professional and visually appealing. Avoid large chunks of text (see PowerPoints chart/diagram tools for alternative methods of presenting information). Your narration should also be professional. Find a quiet place to add audio to your presentation, as background noise can be distracting. If you are not pleased with your narration for a particular slide, you can re-record it.
The information on the slides MUST be cited appropriately (citations only needed for the slides itself). Please include a reference slides at the end of the presentation with your full references in APA format.
