Imagine a society in which everyone’s daily clothing is strictly regulated. Personal style and individual expression through dress are prohibited, and any attempt to deviate from the standard uniform results in consequences. This world emphasizes enforced sameness over individuality. Write an initial discussion post responding to all of the prompts below:
- Using the ideas of at least one philosopher from this week’s readings (e.g., concepts such as individuality, responsibility, freedom, authenticity, angst, dread, anxiety, despair, bad faith, creating one’s own meaning, etc), explain your existential beliefs.
- Reflect on your own experiences: Have you ever felt restricted by a dress code or uniform? How did that experience support or conflict with your existential views?
- Under what circumstances, if any, do you believe uniform requirements are justified? Do these reasons ever outweigh an individual’s desire for personal choice and expression?
- Does the claim “I had no choice” apply in this situation? Are there cases where external pressures genuinely remove our ability to choose?
- According to existentialist thought, meaning can still be created within limitations. Do you believe it would be possible to find meaning in this uniformed society? Explain how or why not.
- Speak on how I grew up being told young ladies should always cover up. I liked dressing up showing clevage and my thighs but I was comfortable, but learned over the years it brought bad attention. In school we were required to wear uniforms to prevent other kids from feeling like they didn't have enough. Also, if everyone was dressed the same it would prevent fights from children stealing items from others.
- As an adult who is a Muslimah now, I love to cover up most of the time, it brings out the natural beauty in the woman. Following the religion brings more peace into my life and only my family would see me without my full garments.
- This should be in APA style with in-text citation and reference.
