Ethical Considerations of Translational Research and Practice in Applied Behavior Analysis

Throughout this course, you have considered the ways in which translational research can and will continue to provide an essential framework for application and practice in real world settings. You have learned that translational research and science represents the application of knowledge gained through basic or laboratory research to improve socially significant behaviors. In this discussion, you will examine important ethical considerations in translational research and science.

  • First, briefly summarize the evolution of ethical codes relevant to research and practice in applied behavior analysis. Include consideration of both American Psychological Association (APA) (2017) codes and Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) (2022) codes.
  • Then, discuss specific considerations around ethics for animal research. Describe the function of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and its role in promoting ethics in animal research.
  • Next, describe ethical considerations specific to translational research. Summarize the guidelines recommended by Betz (2024) to promote ethics in translational research.
  • Conclude by describing some steps that a researcher can take to support their own ethical conduct.
  • Be sure that you are using your course readings throughout to support your analysis.

Review two of your classmates' responses, using the following ideas as a guide:

  • Does the summary of the evolution of ethical codes in applied behavior analysis thoroughly compare the APA (2017) and BACB (2022) codes, highlighting similarities and differences?
  • Is the discussion of ethics in animal research clear and detailed, including an accurate description of the IACUC and its role in promoting ethical practices?
  • Does the explanation of ethical considerations in translational research and Betz’s (2024) guidelines effectively address the unique challenges of this research area?
  • Are the steps recommended for researchers to support their own ethical conduct actionable, clear, and well-supported by the course readings?
  • Ask at least one thoughtful follow-up question.
