psyc4600 Psychological Measurement

psyc4600 Psychological Measurement

Overview

For this week’s assignment, you will show your understanding of two key concepts in psychological measurement: reliability and validity. Reliability means that results are consistent, and validity means that a tool measures what it is supposed to measure.

You will read a short case study about a new scale. Based on the information provided, you will identify the type of reliability shown and explain why it fits that category. You will also identify the type of validity demonstrated and explain your reasoning. Your answers should include at least two scholarly sources and be written in a clear, professional manner.

This assignment will help you practice recognizing reliability and validity in real-world examples, which is an important skill for understanding how psychological tools are evaluated.

Note: FirstPass, an AI-powered feedback tool, is available to use as you draft this assignment. The FirstPass tool for this assignment is available in the Weekly To-Do List and includes directions on how to upload your draft to receive real-time feedback before you submit for a grade.

Review the following case study:

A clinical psychologist develops a new scale to measure depression symptoms. She wants to create a tool that allows for faster and more efficient screening in busy clinical settings, where time is limited and early detection is important. The scale includes questions about mood, sleep, energy levels, and feelings of hopelessness. To test the scale, she asks two different clinicians to score the same group of patients using the scale. The scores from both clinicians are very similar. Later, she compares the scale scores to diagnoses made using a well-established clinical interview. She finds that patients who score high on the scale are also diagnosed with depression using the interview, while those with low scores are not diagnosed with depression.
