WEEK 6 DISCUSSION

WEEK 6 DISCUSSION

PART1 Thus far in the course, you have discussed different approaches to research. You have discussed different kinds of experimental designs, different types of non-experimental designs, and correlational approaches to answering research questions.

This week, you will present two survey research approaches to addressing topics that interest you.

-One will be a quantitative approach that uses rating scale and/or restricted questions.

-The other will be a qualitative approach that uses interviews and/or open-ended survey questions. So you will propose TWO research approaches in your initial response.

Make sure to read this week’s assigned reading before beginning so you understand how your discussion should differ from what you’ve done in previous weeks. In particular, study the sections on survey research. Like last week, you should present your work similar to a research report you might see in a journal. Be as specific as possible to illustrate your understanding of a quantitative survey approach and a qualitative research design. You should include two complete scenarios.

Include the following sections with Headers and Subheaders:

-Background Information/ Purpose: Include your background paragraph and purpose.

-Research Questions

-Methodology

-Participants: Describe your participants and sample.

-Measures: Identify your variables and include how you will measure your variables (if this is appropriate) or describe the type of information you will be seeking and how.

-Procedure: Present exactly what will occur and how it will occur.

-Analysis of Approach: Make sure in the analysis plan to explain the type of methodology you have created.

Submit your initial discussion response early in the week, by Wednesday below, then select classmates to "Reply" to. Comment on at least three of your classmates' contributions supplementing their contributions with references of your own, the discussion exercise closes on Sunday.

PART 2 Select two of the following examples featuring research that is known-historically- to have ethical concerns.

  • Briefly describe the experiments selected (make sure to describe the type of research as well) and their purpose.
  • What were the risks? Benefits? Explain what the ethical concern was.
  • If this experiment were to occur today in a University setting, what might the Institutional Review Board say are concerns or requirements to permit this- if that is possible?
