Complete the worksheet to reflect on your career plans and review a case study.
Introduction
Welcome to PSYC-FPX4600! In this course, you will learn about many different research methods used in psychology. For Assessment 1, you will complete a worksheet that asks you to reflect on your career plans and consider how the information you will learn in this course will support your future work. You will also read a brief case study and identify different types of reliability and validity demonstrated in the example.
Assessment 1 introduces you to the core skills that all psychologists use: understanding how research works and how we measure psychological concepts. You will start by exploring what makes psychology a science and why research is important in every area of the field. Whether you plan to work in counseling, education, business, or another specialty, being able to read and understand research will help you make strong, evidence‑based decisions.
You will also learn about the basic research designs psychologists use when planning studies. This includes understanding how researchers ask questions, make predictions, and choose the best ways to collect data. These ideas form the foundation of good research and help you think more like a scientist when you evaluate information in your coursework and in real‑world situations.
Finally, this assessment covers psychological measurement, which is how researchers turn complex ideas into something we can observe and record. You will review the four levels of measurement and explore reliability and validity, which are two key concepts that show whether a measurement tool is consistent and whether it measures what it is supposed to measure. These skills are important not only for research but also for making informed choices in professional settings, such as selecting assessments, evaluating programs, or interpreting data at work.
Overview
Assessment 1 has two parts. Part A corresponds to Chapters 1 and 2 in the textbook. Part B corresponds to Chapter 4 in the textbook.
