Introduction
Welcome to Assessment 2! In this assessment, you will focus on one of the most important foundations of psychological research: ethics. Ethical principles ensure that research is conducted responsibly, protecting the rights and well-being of participants while maintaining the integrity of scientific inquiry. You will explore the historical background of research ethics, learn about key guidelines, and understand why these standards are essential for building trust in psychological science.
Your work in this assessment includes reviewing the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct and completing the CITI Research Ethics Training. These principles are not limited to research settings, they apply to all areas of psychology, including clinical practice, education, consulting, and organizational settings. A strong understanding of ethics prepares you to make informed, responsible decisions in your future career.
Ethics is a theme that appears throughout this course. You will apply ethical principles again in several later assessments, using what you learn here to evaluate research designs, interpret findings, and consider how to protect individuals involved in psychological studies. Completing this ethics training now will give you a strong foundation for the work ahead.
Overview
For this assessment, you will complete the CITI Research Ethics Training, an online program that teaches the fundamentals of research ethics and the rules for conducting research responsibly. Developed by the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program, this training covers topics such as working with human participants, conducting research ethically, and avoiding conflicts of interest. Many institutions require this training before researchers can begin projects or submit proposals. The goal is to ensure that all researchers understand the ethical standards and laws that guide scientific work.
