Episode Script

During middle and late childhood (ages 6–11), children experience important changes in physical growth, brain development, peer relationships, academic expectations, and self-concept. In this module, we explored how industry versus inferiority, peer comparison, family systems, school environments, and access to physical activity all shape children’s motivation, emotional regulation, and health behaviors. We also examined how development does not occur in isolation but is influenced by biological factors, social stressors, and broader environmental systems. Childhood obesity is a significant public health concern that affects physical health, psychological well-being, and long-term development. Therefore, childhood obesity must be understood within this developmental context, as health behaviors during middle childhood are shaped not only by diet and activity levels, but also by identity formation, peer influence, family dynamics, and community access.

This podcast assignment builds on Module 4 by using the course content and conducting research to support you with analyzing childhood obesity as a lifespan issue, apply developmental concepts, and propose evidence-based solutions grounded in psychological science. By examining childhood obesity through a lifespan development lens, you will analyze how biological, social, and environmental factors interact during middle childhood and evaluate evidence-based strategies that involve families, communities, and health care systems to support healthier developmental outcomes.
