Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease and affects the respiratory system. The disease is caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and the first case was identified in December 2019, Wuhan, China. Symptoms include fatigue, fever, coughing, breathing difficulties, and loss of taste and smell. Due to its severity, most individuals have lost their lives worldwide, and others are in hospitals' critical condition. Several vaccines have been introduced and approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), including AstraZeneca, Johnson and Johnson, Moderna, and Pfizer. This article discusses the Moderna vaccine, including its target, how it works and clinical trials. The Moderna vaccine code name mRNA-1273 was developed by the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Moderna and Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).
