- What is the research question the scholars are asking in this project? What are they trying to understand? What is the history of research on this topic?
- What method of research do they employ? Are they studying statistics, surveys, interviewing people, engaging in ethnography?
- What are the results of their inquiry? What claims do they make? What trends, findings, and claims come out of the work in these areas?

- Watch Film: Maquilapolis (linked in the Resources section below)
"Starting in the 1980s the U.S. and Mexican governments initiated a trade agreement allowing components for everything from batteries, IV tubes, toys to clothes to be imported duty-free into Mexico, assembled there and then exported back duty-free as finished consumer goods for sale in the U.S. Tijuana became known as the television capital of the world, 'TV-juana.' Globalization promised jobs, and working class Mexicans uprooted their lives to flock to the northern frontier in search of better paying work. After a decades long boom in 2001, Tijuana suffered a recession as corporations chased after even cheaper labor in Asia. When the Sanyo plant where Carmen worked for six years moved to Indonesia, they tried to avoid paying the legally mandated severance pay. Carmen became a promotora, or grassroots activist, challenging the usual illegal tactics of the powerful transnationals that are poisoning their workers and the barrios they inhabit."
- Post to Discussion Forum: Maquilapolis (linked in the Resources section below).
- Value: 10 Points (6 for your response, 4 for responding to the question before you)
- Time on Task: 20 minutes
- Keep it to ONE thread of conversation!
Steps:
- Write a 400-word reflection on the film. The following questions can get you started, but your response and discussion should extend beyond them:
- If you could ask anyone in the film a single question, who would you ask and what would you ask them? What insights, inspiration or new knowledge did you gain from this film? Which scenes from the film did you find to be especially powerful? What, specifically, did you find to be compelling?
- The women featured in Maquilapolis come to understand the function of workers in the globalized economy as commodities that can be replaced if they are not productive or not the cheapest available. Do you share their vision of how workers fit into the economy? Who are the primary beneficiaries of this type of free-market system? Whom does it harm?
- The film reports that “when the maquiladora industry began, women represented 80% of the industry’s labor force.” In your view, what are the potential impacts of this gender division on the workplace, families and the community?
- Post a question for the next respondent.
- The initial poster must answer the question of the final poster, completing a chain of Q&A, and dialogue.
- Reply to the thoughts of the person who answered the question you posted (they should be directly after you!)
