Soil is the backbone of our food security. Without healthy soils, farmers wouldn’t be able to provide feed, fiber, food, and fuel. Soil also plays a vital role in the Earth’s ecosystem. Soil provides plants with a foothold for their roots, holds the necessary nutrients for plants to grow and filters rainwater while regulating the discharge of excess rainwater preventing flooding. Soil is capable of storing large amounts of organic carbon and acts as a buffer against pollutants protecting groundwater quality. Soil provides humans with essential construction and manufacturing materials, for example, we build our houses with bricks made from clay and we drink coffee from a cup that is essentially baked soil (clay). Soil also presents a record of past environmental conditions through its horizontal layers and stratigraphy.
