Overview
Reyaan Taher Ahmed
DOB-29/08/2014
Gender -boy
Reyaan was diagnosed with pre-verbal autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) in December 2017.
Reyaan is generally a happy boy with a smiley face, although he is facing difficulty in every
aspect of his life. He is completely non-verbal without a single word, as well as sensory
processing disorder. He has severe sleep issues and wakes up several times in the night,
three to four times a week. The hardest part is putting him back to sleep; he tries but is not
able to sleep quickly. Normally, if he wakes up, he takes four to five hours to fall asleep
again. This affects his daytime activities, and he does not want to wake up in the morning to
go to school. The whole day he feels drowsy and gets irritated and frustrated very easily.
Reyaan’s communication skills are very poor. Most of the time we needs to assume his
needs as he does not have any spoken words yet. He mostly drags our hand, pushes his leg
or cries to indicate his needs. He relies heavily on supporting adults interpreting his needs
and wants.
Reyaan is very emotional; he tries to express his emotion through facial expression, gesture
and sometimes physical behaviours. He always needs adult help to interpret his emotions
and needs. He sometimes has nosebleeds while he screams and is being treated for this; the
GP referred him to Royal London Hospital for this reason.
Reyaan mouths non-food items regularly. We are trying to give him a chew tube at home
and encourage him to chew carrots or apple as suggested by the Occupational Therapist. He
is orally oversensitive, and the rest of his body is hypo and hyper sensitively mixed, affecting
his tactile.
Our main concern is that he is not aware about danger and needs adult
supervision all the time. If anyone calls him, he will go to them and he cannot recognise
dangerous situations such as fire, violence, or abuse. Reyaan is very sensitive to sounds;
certain tones, pitches or loud music will cause him to have a meltdown.
