Overview
Welcome, detectives and genetic sleuths! It's time to put your knowledge of genetics and forensics to the test in resolving a thrilling mystery. For this activity, you have two intriguing options to choose from. Choose only one:
Option 1: Identify the Parent. Imagine you're working in a genetics lab where a baby has been anonymously left on the doorstep. Your task is to determine the baby's parentage by analyzing DNA samples from potential parents. Craft a one-paragraph case detailing your approach, including which genetic markers you would examine and how you would interpret the results to identify the baby's biological parent(s).
Option 2: Be a Detective You've been called to a crime scene where the only evidence left behind is a strand of hair. Your mission is to use your expertise in genetics and forensics to solve the mystery of the perpetrator's identity. Develop a one-paragraph case outlining your investigative strategy, such as analyzing the DNA from the hair sample, cross-referencing it with potential suspects, and explaining how you would use genetic evidence to crack the case wide open.
