Lab report

Overview

The graded assignment will be a lab report that discusses each of the sections of the scientific method in the proper method for a lab report (see document on how to write a lab report for guidance on how to do this effectively). Students should begin writing the lab report immediately following the brainstorming class so that they do not forget key information and get ahead on writing the final document. As a reminder, please write the following sections of material with headers in your report:

  • Introduction and Hypothesis: Using the Lab 2 document above, and our in class discussion, present any initial observations that led to the creation of the product, a brief description of the prototype, the researched background data on the market, the specific research question for the study (the question we are trying to answer by doing the experiment), and the formal hypothesis statement generated by the class. Students should write this as a narrative that leads the reader through the thought processes behind the study. The ideas and information should flow together to lead the reader to understand what we are researching and why, and how we arrived at the hypothesis statement.
  • Experiment OR Methods and Materials: Describe precisely how the experiment was carried out to test the hypothesis as a series of steps. This section should explain what we did as a class to create our survey, including a general description of what types of questions we chose and why (purpose of each question), and the process we used to gather the data. Full sentences and paragraphs are required, no point form allowed. Be detailed and thorough. Someone should be able to replicate our experiment based on this section of writing.
  • Results: Display data in a tables, graphs, or charts. Be sure to display all relevant data. Then discuss and interpret the data as needed to explain what it means in the context of this study and our research questions. Do not write conclusive statements at this point.
  • Conclusion: Write a summary of the key data is it pertains to the original hypothesis. Determine whether the hypothesis was supported by the evidence or disproven. Discuss research questions for this study and what was learned in the process as it relates to those questions.
