Community and Public Health

New patients have arrived to see you! You are reviewing their situations so you can make some assessments in Module 4. These patients have different issues than Miss Lewiston and Mr. Sampson. Not to worry—those two patients will return in a couple weeks to see you again with different issues for you to consider. Similar to Part 1 with Miss Lewiston and Mr. Sampson, the questions for your case study will be directly related to the weekly readings, as well as some other select outside sources (as applicable).

Also similar to last time, one group will post their original findings for Patient #1 and the other group for Patient #2. The group who posts original findings for Patient #1 will answer the dedicated response questions for Patient #2, and vice versa.

Instructions

      1. This case study aligns with Chapters 17, 11, 7, 8, and 23. You reviewed Chapters 17 and 11 last week, and you will review the others in Module 4. You can review them early or wait and just familiarize yourself with the case this week.
      2. Prepare yourself for the case by reading the two updated patient scenarios.
Scenario #1, Patient #1: Ms. Susan Chinn is a 34-year-old Asian patient. She moved to the United States while she was in college and worked her way up into administration in a very successful business. She met and married her husband about five years ago; they had their first child last year. Ms. Chinn and her husband love their urban townhouse and both work extremely hard. She has decided to take one year off to stay at home with her new baby.Ms. Chinn was very excited to visit her parents in China after the baby was born. She had a lovely trip; however, her travel unexpectedly turned when a global pandemic, COVID-19, became headline news. She was permitted to travel home before a travel ban was initiated but had to quarantine under the surveillance of the state and local health departments. The state health department called upon her arrival and asked her a series of questions. Ms. Chinn willingly answered. During her isolation, she was concerned about her and her family getting sick. She also knew that she would need to take the baby for her checkup with the pediatrician as soon as quarantine was over. The state health department told Ms. Chinn that she had to stay home for 14 days, and her local health department called to gather information on her baby. She began to feel worried, as her friends and past coworkers discussed on social media how this virus was from China.
  1. You will respond to the questions for your given patient, integrating at least TWO sources into your findings. The sources can include the textbook and should include at least ONE peer-reviewed article.Patient #1:
    1. Discuss the epidemiological triangle as it relates to COVID-19 in Ms. Chinn’s case. Define and explain the host factors, agent factors, and environmental factors.
    2. What is public health surveillance, and when do public health nurses investigate outbreaks?
    3. How can community health nurses apply the strategies of cultural competence to their practice? Provide at least one example from each of the following four strategies: cultural preservation, cultural accommodation, cultural repatterning, and cultural brokering.
