Overview
Let's discuss the chemicals we purchase/use in our everyday lives and why those should count as products of chemistry/physical sciences. Everything is a product of chemistry to some degree because it's made of chemicals/matter. Share what you prefer to grab at the grocery store and how it is a product of chemistry. If you feel stumped look at the back of the label and tell us what chemicals are listed on there.
Here's an example: Well this week I bought Haribo Gummy Bears and cleaning supplies, among other things. I like to buy Haribo Gummy Bears when I go shopping at Aldi’s. These are made of sugar and gelatin and are products of the German food chemical industry. I like them because, due to the sugar, they are sweet, due to the food coloring chemicals, they are bright and based on how the gelatin cooled, they are shaped like little bears! I also buy bleach and laundry detergents which are good for cleaning clothes with and removing stains. These are obviously chemical in nature because they are big jugs of chemical solutions! The bleach is very alkaline, which denatures stains. The type I bought is “low splash” to prevent making a mess. This should make it more manageable when I am cleaning and trying to remove dirt from appliances or white clothes etc.
