Discussion 1 & 2

Overview

Part 1

Respond to all of the following questions.

  1. Your African American friend asks you for your opinion on having a screening test for the sickle-cell hemoglobin gene. He is getting married soon and his bride-to-be, also African American, suggests that they both get screened before they marry. Knowing that the frequency of the sickle cell hemoglobin gene in the African American population is about 8 percent, what advice would you give your friend? Explain your reasons. Be sure to discuss the gene/genes involved and possible implications for their future children.
  1. Michael Foley has chronic kidney disease and will need a kidney transplant. His younger brother Marcus has the same HLA type as Michael and wants to know whether this guarantees that the transplanted kidney will survive if he donates his kidney. What would you tell Marcus?
  1. Derek Peterson, a weight lifter, has large back, neck, and arm muscles. He believes that his muscles are larger because his high-protein diet is causing him to develop more muscle fibers. He believes that increasing his protein intake will form even more muscle fibers, and asks your opinion. What would you tell him? If his diet is not responsible for his development of muscle fibers then what is?

  2. Respond to all of the following questions.
    1. Claudia Smith was working in her garden when she cut her hand on the sharp edge of her garden rake. She washed the wound with soap and water and applied a bandage.
