While we will discuss more details on how to write compelling grants and workshop Specific Aims at our September 25 session, below are some brief guidelines about the purpose of each section: 1) The Specific Aims page should: a) concisely set up the background; b) communicate the big picture question and the specific hypothesis that you will test; and c) state (experimentally) how you will address your hypothesis, and what you will learn if your study is successful. 2) The Significance section should include background, the big picture question, what we understand and, more importantly, what we do not understand and need to address. 3) The Approach section will include specific supporting rationale and the research design for each Aim (and subaim, if included). The rationale for each Aim should be included first along with the hypothesis being tested, in a ‘Rationale’ section. This should be followed by an ‘Experimental Procedures’ section, in which the experimental design is clearly described. Finally, each Aim should close with an ‘Anticipated Results and Interpretations, Limitations and Alternative Strategies’ Section. As the title suggests, this section should include expected outcomes along with alternate strategies for overcoming potential problems or limitations. These subheadings can be titled differently, but the relevant content must be included.
