Overview
As defined by the ANA, "Nursing theories provide a foundation for clinical decision-making. These theoretical models in nursing shape nursing research and create conceptual blueprints, ultimately determining the how and why that drive nurse-patient interactions."
Understanding the "how and why" of our profession is essential as nurses are knowledge workers. Peter Drucker illuminated the importance of knowledge in work, in his seminal theory of management. You will find that nurses should possess all of the Intellectual Virtues for knowledge work as we add to the foundation of information in our profession.
Keep these definitions in mind as you develop your own personal philosophy of nursing.
